Growing Banana Trees for Fruit

Banana trees in the United States are normally used for ornamental purposes and grow quickly no matter your growing zone.  But, there are varieties that can also be grown for its fruit if you live in the right climate.  Granted, you can grow any type of tree if you have a greenhouse set up to accommodate the right growing zone environment.

California Gold
If you live in cold climate zone 8 and up, the best banana tree to grow for fruit is the California Gold. Also called the "apple" banana.  Ordinarily, other banana trees produce in zone 9 and up.

Planting Location: Bananas require warm consistent weather.  Planting next to a building, next to cement or asphalt walks, or driveways will also help the banana tree keep warm.   helps. Plant your banana tree in an area that is protected from the wind, as the wind will cause leaf tearing.  High winds can also blow over your banana tree.

Soil Medium: The soil I prefer is Miracle Grow Moisture Control and Miracle Grow potting soil.  All bananas should be planted in rich, well-drained soil. pH levels should be between 5.5 and 6.5. Do not plant in salty soil.  If in doubt, the Miracle Grow soil is your best choice.

Irrigation: Because of their large leaves, bananas require a great deal of water. Deep watering is necessity during hot weather months. Do not let plants dry out, but do not over water. Standing water will cause root rot and kill your banana plant. Mulch your banana tree well to protect the shallow roots and retain moisture. Container grown plants will dry out quickly and may need more deep watering over plants grown in-ground.

Fertilization: Because banana trees grow very quickly, they are heavy feeders. During warm weather, apply a balanced of 8:10:8 fertilizer once per month. Do not allow the fertilizer to come in contact with the trunk.

Frost Protection: Bananas can survive down to 28° F for short periods of time. In cold climate zones, cut your banana tree down to a stump in the fall time before the first frost.  Mulch heavily with grass clippings, leaves, and straw.   Find out more:  http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/banana.html
