FLOATING POND PLANTS are easy to grow and will thrive in small containers and large.

Many pond plants look as if they are floating plants, like water lily and water lotus.
Plants like lilies and lotus are actually potted plants planted beneath the water with their leaves growing to the surface of the water. There are pond plants which are "free floaters". Floating pond plants grow by drifting on the surface of the water with their roots dangling below.  These pond plants oxygenate and clarify the water.  Floating pond plants also provide hiding places for young minnows and goldfish.

 Water Hyacinth
Although water hyacinth is a tropical climate pond plant, zone 8, it will winter-over well in an enclosed aquarium placed in a sunny window.  From just a few water hyacinth plants, you will gain dozens of plants by the end August or September. A native plant of South Africa, the water hyacinth thrives in full sun and a humid climate. An eatable plant, water hyacinth is high in vitamin A.  Water hyacinth is also an excellent compost for the garden. Do not allow plant to freeze.
  Parrot Feather
Parrot Feather comes in a couple of varieties; regular green stem and red stemmed parrot feather. This is an extremely prolific plant that will last through the winter. Do not allow water to freeze over or winter-over parrot feather indoors. Propagate parrot feather by dividing into small stems and allow to free float in the water. Within a week or two, you will see new parrot feather growth!
 Fairy Moss / Azolla
Fairy Moss is a tiny little free floating plant and prolific grower. In hot zones, fairy moss grows best in filtered light. Fairy Moss turns orange and yellow in the fall time.  Purchase fairy moss locally, because it does not ship well.  Do not allow water to freeze or winter-over indoors.

 Water Lettuce
Water Lettuce also grows best in warm climates.  It is a very prolific grower, but is prone to pest infestation. There are 2 types of water lettuce, small rosette and large.  Water lettuce is not eatable, but is an excellent compost for the garden. Do not allow water and air temp to freeze or winter-over indoors.
 Frog Bit
Frog bit is a cut little lily-like plant and prolific grower. I have actually seen tree frogs sitting upon the frog bit's tiny "lily pads" in my container pond. Do not allow water and air to freeze or winter-over indoors.
 Sensitive Plant
Sensitive plant is an elegant floating pond plant with pretty yellow puff ball flowers. The fern-like leaves curl and close at night and open during the day. For cold regions, sensitive will winter-over best indoors.

FLOATING POND PLANTS need plenty of sunshine.
If you live in a desert zone where the sun and heat is intense in the summer time, filtered sunlight is best.  Filter your pond sunlight with trees or hang a canopy made of nursery shade cloth.

Floating Pond Plants need fertilizer the same as potted pond plants.
Although fish provide an excellent source of nutrients for floating pond plants, fertilizer is important for flowering growth.  Do not worry if you find algae growing in your pond.  This is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.  Algae, however, can get out of control.  There are products available at your local hardware and pet store to control algae growth.  Use in limited amounts in moderations.
