HOW TO GROW  Wheatgrass
Wheatgrass is full of healthy vitamins and is easy to grow.

| ►1 | 2 |

What You’ll Need:
Wheatgrass
seeds
H2O
Growing tray
Paper Towel

A 10 gallon aquarium with fish
Large Unused No soap Nylon scouring pad

Grow Wheatgrass with Aquaculture

The benefits of aquaponics are:
Less water is used, plants grow faster, plants grow healthier, and plants are naturally fertilized by the aquarium fish.  So, Instead of fussing with soil and peat moss, grow your wheatgrass the aquaponics way!  (Wheatgrass can easily be grown potted in soil too.)

Purchasing Wheatgrass Seeds:

The seeds purchased for this project came directly from our local health food store.  Wheatgrass seeds can also be purchased online on eBay.com and the cost is only $3 per 1800 seeds total.  I purchase many of my garden seed through sellers online and have been very pleased with the results.

What to Do?
1.
Purchase a small plastic basket with small holes.
2.    Line the basket with large unused, clean nylon scouring pads.
3.    Rinse and soak pad and spread seeds.
4.    Cover seeds with paper towel and wet it down
5.    Allow plastic tray to drain but place tray in a dish to catch excess water. A little standing water is ok.
6.    Place in a dark area for 3 days keeping the paper towel wet.
7.    Remove paper towel.  Hang seed tray in a fish aquarium with bottom of tray at the water surface.
8.    Place aquarium in a sunny window and watch the wheatgrass grow!

Day 1
The Wheatgrass seeds have slight growth poking out! How exciting!
These seeds were purchased from a neat lady on eBay and I was amazed to see how fast they started!

Day 2
Wheatgrass seedlings now have 1/2 inch roots!

Day 3

The Wheatgrass has grown quickly with strong 1/4 - 1/2 inch sprouts!  The paper towel has been removed and the basket placed in the aquarium in a sunny window.

Day 4

On Day 4 the wheatgrass sprouts began looking more like blades of grass with a darker green color.  The wheatgrass was also bending toward the light, so I rotated the basket for even coverage. I also noticed significant root growth dangling below the basket!

Day 5 & 6

The Wheatgrass is growing about 1/4 inch per day and is now looking more like lush blades of grass.

Day 7
The wheatgrass is now 6 inches tall!  It's time to harvest, but I am going to let it grow as tall as I can and let it go to seed for even more grass.  The big plan is to plant wheatgrass seed out in the dog run.  This way the dogs will have healthy grass to eat instead of getting sick on weeds and crabgrass.

A few weeks later...

I've got a wheatgrass jungle!  It's a matter of time before the grass will go to seed.

Harvesting:
When the grass reaches 4 inches tall, harvest with a pair of scissors.  Cut only down to ˝ inch above the soil line.  You will receive about 2 harvests from your flat of grass that is full of rich vitamins and minerals!  Juice your wheatgrass or add to a green salad.
