Winter Water Hyacinth Care

I receive lots of questions about how to take care of water hyacinth during the wintertime...

If you live in zones 9 and up it is fairly simple.  All you need to do is keep your water hyacinth in a sunny location and cover your pond with a clear tarp, or cover it with a cold frame. All hyacinth turns a little yellow with brown spots during the winter.  This is normal... and your plants will green-up in the late springtime weather.

Water Hyacinth does not winter-over well indoors, but it can be done. If you keep your hyacinth in a goldfish aquarium in a sunny window.

Water Hyacinth will not winter-over in a basement or garage.  Florescent lighting will not work.  Water Hyacinth needs bright natural light to survive.

Water Hyacinth is cheap!  Although it's sad to see them go... the cost of their upkeep outweighs the actual value of the plant.

  ▪  If you are an enthusiast like me, building a greenhouse with an oil heater is the best option for keeping all of your pond plants healthy throughout the cold winter months.
