Winter Water Hyacinth Care

  I receive lots of questions about how to take care of water hyacinth during the wintertime... 

If you live in zones 9 and up it is fairly simple.  All you need to do is keep your water hyacinth in a sunny location and cover your pond with a clear tarp, or cover it with a cold frame. All hyacinth turns a little yellow with brown spots during the winter.  This is normal... and your plants will green-up in the late springtime weather. 

  ▪ Water Hyacinth does not winter-over well indoors, but it can be done. If you keep your hyacinth in a goldfish aquarium in a sunny window.

  ▪ Water Hyacinth will not winter-over in a basement or garage.  Florescent lighting will not work.  Water Hyacinth needs bright natural light to survive.

  ▪ Water Hyacinth is cheap!  Although it's sad to see them go... the cost of their upkeep outweighs the actual value of the plant. 

  ▪  If you are an enthusiast like me, building a greenhouse with an oil heater is the best option for keeping all of your pond plants healthy throughout the cold winter months.
